Plato claimed that it would be impossible and illogical for a farmer to provide for his family, construct his home, make his own clothes, and make his own table in order to explain the logic of society’s emergence with the division of labor. The reason for the emergence of professions was thus demonstrated by Plato by outlining the need for people to focus on a single job. To advance their profession and safeguard their professional interests, people in the same profession have banded together and developed their own ethical principles. These moral guidelines are frequently ingrained in professionals all over the world. Only members of a specific profession are subject to the application of professional ethics rules. There are as many different ethical standards as there are professions. It is impossible to become knowledgeable about ethics in every profession. Additionally, in order to comprehend the fundamentals of professional ethics, one must possess professional knowledge. Because of this, ethical transgressions in partially public professions have little effect on public sentiment but can have a significant impact on public conscience in the case of severe transgressions. On the other hand, if the foundation of society is the division of labor, moral decline in certain occupational groups may eventually pose a threat to a sizable portion of society. The morality of society will be impacted in the short term by the moral decline that occurs in professional groups that appeal to large populations, particularly in the profession of journalism. Professional groups that lack morality not only endanger social morality but also their own existence.
Similar to how a society can experience turmoil or chaos in the absence of social morality, the same can happen in the absence of ethical standards in a given profession. Therefore, the profession may stray from its intended direction. A profession’s deviance from its primary goal may result in its extinction. People who make up society lose faith in the legal system over time, for instance, if judges in a state decide on court cases based solely on their own personal interests rather than legal principles. People may choose not to apply to the legal system if they believe that their rights won’t be fairly protected. Judges won’t be necessary in a place where he seeks his individual rights. In such a society, justice cannot exist in its fullest form. There is unrest in this situation among the populace. Justice is the cornerstone of property, as the adage goes, and it also illustrates what will happen to the state when there is no justice. The media similarly destroys itself when it fails to carry out its fundamental reporting responsibility or when it fabricates news. If someone claims that they have been misinformed, they are free to try and satisfy their own news needs. Since no one in society possesses the professionalism required for the profession of journalism, there will be an increase in false information and confusion about the facts.
For the entire society as well as the professional community, professional ethics are extremely important. Ethics should be valued during both vocational training and professional practice in order for the rules of professional ethics to be applied and developed in the proper manner. Socrates asserted that virtue can be attained through knowledge and that morality can only be attained through a quality education.
