In the Pazar District of the province of Rize, in the village of ubaş, Mehmet Haberal was born on October 29, 1944. In 1954, he received his diploma from Zonguldak Gazi Primary School. He completed his high school education at Zonguldak Mehmet elikel in 1961 before earning his medical degree from Ankara University in 1967 and specializing in general surgery in 1971.

Between 1974 and 1975, he was employed by the University of Colorado Medical School Transplantation Center. He founded the Burn and Transplantation Unit under the General Surgery Department at Hacettepe University during the same time period.
Successful Turkish scientist Mehmet Haberal has made significant firsts in his field both in Turkey and around the globe.

Some of these include the first interrelative transplantation in Turkey, where a 12-year-old boy received a kidney from his mother, the transplantation of a dead kidney from the European Transplantation Union, a kidney transplant from a cadaver in 1988, and a liver transplant from a cadaver in the Middle East, Europe, and Turkey on March 15, 1990. On April 24, 1990, segmental liver transplantation from a living donor was performed for the first time in children. On May 16, 1992, segmental liver transplantation from a living donor was performed for the first time in adults. The “Organ and Tissue Removal, Storage, Vaccination and Transplantation Law” No. 2238 was prepared by Haberal, who was appointed Associate Professor in 1976, and it went into effect on June 3, 1979.

The Turkish Organ Transplantation and Burn Treatment Foundation was founded by him in 1980, and the Hemodialysis Center was inaugurated in 1982. He joined as an original founder and was elected president of the Turkish Organ Transplantation Association in 1990. He established the Turkish Transplantation and Burn Treatment Foundation, the Haberal Education Foundation, and Başkent University on September 14, 1933. The Middle East Burn and Fire Disasters Association was established by him in 1999. The “Millennium Medal” was presented in 2000 in Rome during the World Transplantation Association meeting. He established Kanal B, Radio Baskent, and Baskent News Agency in 2004. For the first time in the 97-year history of the American College of Surgeons, a Turkish surgeon was chosen as an Honorary Member in October 2010.

He has carried out more than 320 liver transplants and 1730 kidney transplants to date. Haberal, a member of 35 national and international medical associations, the author of 1428 scientific publications in Turkish and English, and the recipient of 25 national and international awards, ran unsuccessfully from the DYP for the position of Rize deputy in the general elections of 1991 despite his accomplishments.

On April 13, 2009, he was taken into custody as part of the Ergenekon investigation. On April 17, 2009, he was arrested on charges that he belonged to Ergenekon.

Despite being chosen as a Zonguldak deputy by the CHP in the elections of June 12, 20011, he was unable to take the oath because he was in custody. He was admitted as a deputy to the Turkish Grand National Assembly on October 2, 2013, following his release on August 5, 2013.
